PHYSICAL CLASS

Week 2 (07/09/2022)

In the week 2 class, we learned how to set a basic work environment. Also, learned how to use pen tools, and strokes and to set dartboard dimensions and colours.

We practiced tracing shapes by using a pen tool.

Week 3 (14/09/2022)

We started off working on our vormator challenge individual.
Afterward, we learned essential shortcuts while Mr.Hafiz showed us how to utilize the pathfinder and shape builder tools.

Essential shortcuts

to see outlines - command + Y
movement tool - V
copy - option + drag
duplicate - command + D
group - command + G
ungroup - command +shift+ G

Pathfinder & Shape builder tool

transparency panel(blending mode)
darken / multiply(most preferred) / colour burn

Pathfinder (shape tool)

There are four different shape tools in pathfinder: Unity, Minus Front, Intersect and Exclude.

The image above shows each different effect of the shape tools.

Pathfinder (divide tool)

By using the divide tool, we can create some patterns as well.

Week 3 (14/09/2022)

Ms. Noranis had a lecture about creating characters referring to shapes and colour psychology.
Different shapes imply different personalities. Not only the shapes but also the colours can define the personalities of characters. In the lecture slides, the characters of "Inside Out" was used as an example.

INSTRUCTION

Task 1 : Vormator Challenge

Create a character by using the shapes provided above.

I created characters called 'bear-cat'. They are always happy and dancing all the time.
The bear-cats come in three different colours, pink, blue and lavender. They are good friends together.

The arm and leg on the left side were coloured in a slightly darker colour to give the character a three dimension look.

Final submission of Vormator challenge

For the little hill in the background, two different objects were combined together and applied a multiply layer. By using the unity of shape builder tool, I created shadows of the bear-cats to show a bit of a three-dimensional effect.

REFLECTION

Experience

I’ve mostly used pen tools to create illustrations because those were the only tools I was friendly with. However, after a few weeks of learning how to use pathfinder, shape builder, etc, I became able to create more interesting illustrations utilizing various tools properly.

Observation

I observed that I enjoy the process of creating shapes by using pathfinders and shape builders.

Findings

I found that knowing how to use shortcuts and tools properly is quite essential to work efficiently in a given period of time. Regarding that, I feel confident and glad for I’m learning those essential skills in IVN class. I’m also excited about the upcoming learnings.
