REFLECTION
Experience
For the past 14 weeks, I was assigned three tasks to work on. The first exercise of task 1 involved practicing the basic typographic system. Learning about different fundamental typographic systems helped me to develop a sense of composition and the ability to express concepts through letters and placement. The second exercise of task 1 entailed deconstructing an image to discover five letters and transforming them into letterforms that show the characteristics of the image. The second exercise of task 1 was inspiring. The progress of creating letterforms that reflects the impression of an image helped me to learn the power of visual interaction of letterforms.
Moving on to the second task, I was instructed to create a key artwork that represented myself using at least four letters from my name, along with collaterals and an Instagram page. This task was meaningful in that it prompted me to meditate on how to express myself through letters. Moreover, it was advantageous for me in that it gave a brief introduction to the progress of branding.
Lastly, the third task was to design a full typeface with a presentation and applications. I was thrilled to design my typeface, however; it wasn't that simple. Creating a typeface demanded a significant amount of time, numerous revisions, and decision-making.
Observation
While working on all given assignments, I learned the importance of time-management skills and critical thinking while working on this task. There were numerous instances where I had to make adjustments to my ideas and design direction. These experiences highlighted the need for further development of my critical thinking skills.
Findings
Initially, typography design was not an area I was particularly passionate about. However, this class has helped me recognize the value of typography. Over the past 14 weeks, I was reminded once again that typefaces and layouts are one of the most foundational design elements in most design works. Also, understanding how to effectively work with typefaces would empower visual interaction and the impact of any design. Additionally, completing all given tasks provided me with a stronger comprehension of typography design and a sense of achievement.
