FEEDBACK

Week 12 (14/11/2022)

It’s crucial to have a good balance. The rabbit figure is not suitable to show “togetherness” since it captures viewers’ eyes too much. The whiskers and the nose of the rabbit figure don’t look like they belong to the rabbit.

REFLECTION

Experience As a special task, I chose to work on an Ang Pow(a red envelope for Chinese New Year) as a submission to "The Jaya Grocer Ang Pow Design Competition". It was a great group opportunity to participate in a design competition. Working on the task as a group has benefited me to learn how to communicate efficiently. In addition, I've given to understand a glimpse of teamwork in the design field.

Observation I observed that our group was successful in communicating and proposing ideas, which led us to a phase of huge idea development. I also noticed that working as a group gives a higher sense of responsibility since the result of the task would affect not only myself but also my group member. Which has been a part of my motivation during the whole working progress.

Findings It was very efficient and encouraging to work as a group. I found that our group complemented each other properly and had reached a sufficient goal we have set beforehand.

Uncials

Uncials incorporated some features of the Roman cursive hand such as the A, D, E, H,  M, U, and Q. “Uncia” means twelfth of anything in Latin. Thus, some experts hypothesize that the letters of the Uncials refer to letters that are one inch(one-twelfth of a foot).

Half-uncials

A further formalization of the cursive hand, Half-uncials mark the formal beginning of lowercase letterforms. The finest examples of half-uncials are in manuscripts produced in Ireland and England.

Caroline minuscule

Charlemagne, the first unifier of Europe since the Romans, issued an edict in 789 to standardize all ecclesiastical texts. It set the standard for calligraphy for a century, including capitalization and punctuation.

majuscules = uppercase

minuscules = lowercase

Blackletter(Textura)

The dissolution of Charlemagne’s empire caused regional variations of Alcuin’s script.
A condensed and strongly vertical letterform(black letter or Textura) in Northern Europe was popular.

A rounder and more open-hand type of letterform(rotunda) prevailed in the southern region.

Gutenberg

Gutenberg’s letterform was built on a combination of engineering, metalsmithing, and chemistry.
The letterform was created to accurately mimic the handwriting of the scribe’s and was affected by the Black letter style of Northern Europe. Gutenberg used 270 different matrices to form a typeface resembling the handwriting style.

Many printers from other countries came to the city of Mainz to learn the new printing technology and spread it back out across Europe. Two German printers, Conrad Sweynheym and Schoffer established a press at the Benedictine monastery in Subiaco.
